62% of young women aged 15-24 not engaged in employment.

The data from Bangladesh reveals a concerning trend, with 62% of young women aged 15-24 not engaged in employment, education or training, indicating a significant waste of the country’s demographic potential. Factors such as limited employment opportunities, especially for women with lower education levels and inadequate technical and vocational training contribute to this trend. Urgent reforms are needed in the education sector to enhance young people’s employability and create quality job opportunities, addressing this issue is crucial for social stability and achieving sustainable development goals.

As young women not being engaged in employment, education or training (NEETs) in Bangladesh requires a multifaceted approach. Some potential solutions could include:

Expanding Economic Opportunities:Creating more job opportunities for women, particularly in sectors traditionally dominated by men, through targeted government policies and incentives for businesses to hire and train female workers.

Improving Education and Training Opportunities:Enhancing access to quality education and vocational training programs, especially in rural areas, to equip young women with the skills needed to participate in the workforce.

Promoting Gender Equality:Implementing policies and programs that promote gender equality in education and employment, including initiatives to eliminate gender-based discrimination and stereotypes.

Increasing the Social Safety Net:Strengthening social safety nets to provide financial support and assistance to young women from disadvantaged backgrounds, enabling them to pursue education and training opportunities.

Building the Community: Collaborating with communities, families, and local organizations to raise awareness about the importance of education and training for young women and to overcome cultural barriers that may hinder their participation in the workforce.

Entrepreneurial Investing:Supporting entrepreneurship and small business development among young women, providing them with the tools and resources to start and grow their own businesses.

Monitoring and Evaluation:Establishing robust monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track progress in reducing the NEET rate among young women and to identify areas for improvement in policy implementation.

Collaboration with stakeholders:Engaging with stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, and the private sector to develop and implement comprehensive strategies for addressing the issue of NEETs among young women in Bangladesh.

By implementing these and other targeted interventions, Bangladesh can work towards reducing the NEET rate among young women and unlocking their full potential as valuable contributors to the country’s economy and society.
